The US Series continues with the first of a two part discussion on Trust Structuring for US & Foreign Settlors, sponsored by US Tax & Financial Services. The discussion will be structured using a cross border case study to allow our panel to draw out some advice and practical considerations for private wealth advisors.

Darlene F Hart - Founder, US Tax & Financial Services Sarl, Zurich (est 1986). With offices in London, Zurich and Geneva, and clients in over 30 countries, the firm provides US tax advice, planning, and compliance services for individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts and estates throughout the world.

Darlene has over 30 years of tax, accounting, financial and retirement planning experience. Her dynamic presentations on tax and financial matters, including the growing global transparency of the tax industry, make her a sought-after speaker to other professionals, banks, investors, accountants and the general public.

Today, much of her efforts are devoted to helping private clients become compliant with their US tax obligations through various voluntary disclosure programs and options available with the Internal Revenue Service. She also advises banks, financial institutions and trust companies on the US government's FATCA legislation, which directly affects their relationships with their US clients, as well as assisting the companies and their beneficiaries in meeting their US tax filing obligations. Darlene holds a BS in Accounting and a MS in Tax from the University of Houston. She is an Enrolled Agent and a member of the Association of International Accountants.

Jonathan E. Gopman - Partner, Akerman LLP, Naples. He is Chair of the Asset Protection Committee of RPTE Section of the ABA and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the American College of Tax Counsel. He is a member of STEP. He is AV rated, has been selected multiple times for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®, as a Florida Super Lawyer, included in Florida Trend's Legal Elite was recognized in Worth Magazine as one of the top 100 estate planning attorneys in the US. He was the co-author of the former revised BNA Tax Management Portfolio on Estate Tax Payments and Liabilities and has authored and co-authored numerous articles on asset protection and estate planning and chapters in books on asset protection and frequently lectures on these topics throughout the world. He is also a co-author and co-editor of "The Tools &Techniques of Trust Planning 1st Edition'' in 2016 with Stephen R. Leimberg.

Jonathan has been interviewed for and quoted in a number of publications such as the New York Times, Bloomberg, Forbes, Wealth Manager and Elite Traveler. He received his J.D. from Florida State University College of Law (with High Honors) and his LL.M. (in Estate Planning) from the University of Miami School of Law. He also serves on the boards of several companies.

Sarjul Patel - Associate Director, US & UK Individual Tax, Trusts, US Tax & Financial Services Ltd, London. Sarjul has over a decade of experience in US and UK taxation. He started his career in tax at Frank Hirth plc, when he joined the Graduate Programme. Sarjul spent nine years at Frank Hirth, progressing to Tax Manager in the final two years. He has developed a breadth of experience in US tax matters concerning individuals, corporations and trusts. Sarjul also has extensive experience in the UK taxation of individuals, with a focus on navigating them through what can be a complex tax system.

Sarjul's specialty is in dealing with US and UK taxation of High Net Worth Individuals, particularly those with interests in non-US trust structures. Sarjul holds a BSc in Economics, is a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) and is an Enrolled Agent (EA).

Thomas Nabholz - Partner and Head of Tax Practice, Meyerlustenberger Lachenal, Zurich (Switzerland). Thomas Nabholz is a certified Swiss tax expert and leads Meyerlustenberger Lachenal's tax practice. He joined the firm as a partner in October 2019 with 14 years' worth of experience in corporate tax consulting at a Big Four firm where he co-headed the Swiss Financial Services International Tax and Transaction Tax Services practice. In addition, Thomas Nabholz worked 6 years with a small accounting firm where he advised private and corporate clients in tax matters, including medium and long term assignments to the tax departments of Swiss Re, UBS, and Swarovski. He has led the tax workstreams of many multi-disciplinary international engagements in the areas of private wealth structuring, relocation, corporate restructurings, and M&A. He is fluent in German, English, and French.

Adam Herbert - Partner - Tax & Trusts, Wilsons LLP, London. Adam is the head of our Tax & Trusts team and he advises predominantly private individuals and their trustees on all areas of UK and international wills, trusts and personal tax planning. He has a particular interest in advising international families, advising those looking to move to or invest in the UK, together with those requiring advice on their family governance and succession planning worldwide. In doing so, Adam works closely with other professional advisers around the globe.
